Start-Up Nation Finder mapped Israel’s growing Climate Tech ecosystem of over 850 innovative companies, showing that the ‘Start-Up Nation’ is on its way to becoming a global Climate Tech hub. The 2023 Landscape Map includes a selection of companies that received venture funding or grants in the last two years.
Start-Up Nation Central’s 2023 Climate Tech Landscape Map showcases the growing Israeli tech ecosystem focused on helping our planet. It also signals that there is real potential for Israel to become the Climate Tech Nation.
Israel is already a renowned global leader in technological innovation in fields such as smart mobility, digital health, fintech, and cyber-security. In addition, Israel is a global leader in water and irrigation solutions and precision agriculture, becoming one of the few countries in the world to reverse desertification and develop sustainable agriculture in an arid climate.
Currently, there is a rapid acceleration of Israeli startups with solutions addressing climate change. Research conducted by Start-Up Nation Central between 2021-2023 reveals an ecosystem of over 850 Israeli startups and growth stage companies developing technologies that can directly or indirectly promote mitigation (decarbonization) or assist with adaptation efforts to climate change.
Climate Tech innovation spans many industries and markets. Start-Up Nation Central classifies companies according to six key areas, with associated sub-categories under each category. The six areas are: Food and Land Use, Energy Transition, Carbon Tech, Water, Transportation and Logistics, and Cleaner Industry Tech.
The classification was developed by Start-Up Nation Central following the guidelines and best practices of leading international sources including Pitchbook, HolonIQ, the Israel Innovation Authority, and PLANETech.

Sub-categories: Mobility Optimization (micro-mobility, ridesharing, accessible public transport), Electric Vehicles (charging infrastructure & manufacturing), and Eco-efficient Logistics (fuel efficiency, fleet management, traceability)
🌾Food & Land Use – How we produce food sustainably
Sub-categories: Sustainable Proteins (plant-based, lab-grown, insect-based, etc.), Sustainable Farming (irrigation, new generation fertilizers, precision agriculture, crop preservation, regenerative ag, eco-efficient farming equipment, indoor farming, etc.)
🏨Cleaner Industry Tech – The processes and materials we use to make things
Sub-categories: Sustainable Materials & Circularity (low carbon polymers, waste management and recycling, food loss and waste, etc.), Eco-Efficient Manufacturing (process innovation that reduces energy consumption and materials, including predictive maintenance, inspection and testing), Green Construction (green steelmaking, green cement making, low carbon construction materials, etc.)

Sub-categories: Water tech for Industrial and Municipal Applications (including desalination, water consumption, wastewater treatment & reuse, etc.), and Oceans and Water Ecosystems.
💨Carbon Tech – How we monitor and remove emissions and improve our understanding of climate
Sub-categories: Carbon Capture, Storage, Sequestration, and Utilization (point-source carbon capture, direct air capture, nature-based solutions), Carbon Analytics, Earth Data & Fintech (carbon accounting and reporting, carbon offsetting, and solutions that encourage sustainable consumption, earth observation, weather monitoring and more).
This landscape map isn’t big enough to showcase the full list of 850+ climate tech startups mapped on Start-Up Nation Finder, so we prioritized companies that have been venture-funded or have received grants in the past two years (1.1.21 to 20.2.2023) and excluded those that have been acquired or gone public. All included companies were founded in Israel and have R&D teams in the country with their own proprietary IP.
